On October 1, 2016, North Carolina legislature passed new laws that benefit cyclists in North Carolina. These new laws became effective on October 1 and included:
1. Allowing vehicles to pass slower-moving bicycles and mopeds in a no-passing zone when all safety requirements are met (and with a very good four foot distance specified) 2. Legalizing the commonly-used right-hand turn signal for right turns 3. Extending motorcyclists’ legal protection as vulnerable road users to bicyclists 4. Updating requirements for a rear light or reflective gear on bicyclists at night 5. Revising the definitions of autocycles and mopeds, and including a new definition for electric assisted bicycles
